This 2022 US Open Beer Championship gold medal winner is probably the most complex beer we’ve ever released. Over two years spent in Rum, Bourbon, and Moscatel barrels gave this beer a plethora of flavors including raisin, fig, cinnamon, oak, red wine, vanilla, crème brulée, and many more

On paper this is almost my perfect barleywine. In reality, though this is quite good, something is holding it back. Maybe the Muscatel barrels, I don't get much of a vinous note, rather it's more akin to sweet grape juice. It isn't all that strong but it is distracting. The rum barrels might account for the brown sugar note and there is a little rum at the exhale. It's the bourbon barrels that are strongest and they are great, lending rich, deep booze plus a little leather and vanilla.
Overall this dang good and I probably should have bought more than one pack.

From a blind tasting, compliments of @dim
Poured at just over fridge temp. Pours very dark brown with little head. The nose immediately screams barrel aged to me. Not just bourbon though - I'm thinking brandy. Sweet dark fruit - vinous. Could be cognac, brandy, sherry. Red wine seems to mingle as well. It took a minute, but a rich toffee makes an appearance. A hint of vanilla, and some brown sugar. Let's move on to the taste.
The taste screams wine barrel to me. Sweet red grapes, some Armagnac, toffee, a hint of cherries, maybe even raspberries. The fruit on this is really extreme, both on the nose and on the taste. Lovely. Doesn't end up too sweet at all. I wonder if it was even brewed with fruit. As for ABV, I am thinking it's very high. Maybe 11% (which is still high!). Very curious what this is. My guess is a red wine barrel-aged English barleywine.
