Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. "Largemouth Coffee IPA"
16 fl. oz. can seemingly without production codes or a best by date
Notes via stream of consciousness: I have no idea what this is. Is it a coffee beer, or is it an IPA with coffee added? Let's find out! It's poured a very hazy, but also very light-golden colored body beneath a thumb's width of white foam. I smell resinous and citrusy hops, and what I think is coffee but I'm not sure. It's interesting and enticing. Yeah, that's coffee. On to the taste, the coffee is surprisingly strong but the hops are there as well. The label lists them as Azacca, Citra, and Simcoe with vanilla and coffee added as well. It's weird but I like it. I'm not really getting the Azacca, but Azacca isn't as bold of a hop as either Citra or Simcoe so that makes sense. I'm also not getting a lot of vanilla but I'm assuming it's bolstering the coffee flavor. It's got a bold bitterness which is also a little bit unique as so many brewers go light on their hazy IPAs. I've got to give them credit for creativity, and creativity that works - I hope this wasn't just a "happy accident". In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. The carbonation and extra proteins have worked together to maintain a thin but solid surface of creamy foam, and there are wide swaths of lacing all about the glass. I was going to try another beer and write a review after this but I think it's best at this point to just enjoy what I've got left.
