Presentation: Sampled at the Fernandes Brewery Tap, Wakefield during my Easter Trip back to the UK.
On Pump #1 of 6, during a lazy session on an early Monday evening. Colorful yellow oval pumpclip with a blue border and a striking Celtic design. Listed at 3.8% at the base of the Pumpclip.
Appearance: Sheer yellow-golden body with an impressive white head. Long lasting uniform cap slides down the glass as the golden liquid pistons up and down with each drink. Fantastic carbonation, vigorous in strength, yet controlled in dispersion. Superb thirst quenching looks!
Nose: Spicy hops, grapefruit, freshly cut lawns and some light biscuit malt which has a hint of Pilsner about it. Very nice and attractive. Not the biggest of noses but if has a very refreshing character.
Taste: Very much in line with the nose, except that the malts bolster the middle. Zesty hops, spicy yeast and hop bitterness mix with a sharp lemon-grapefruit; this is all balanced nicely with a very rounded malt base. Hoppy finish is littered with bitterness, with a mild dryness. The flavors are never high in strength but they are extremely well defined and easily discernible.
Mouthfeel: The only down side of this brew was the mouthfeel. It lacks guts, even though it is only 3.8%, this is still a reasonable strength for a UK Cask brew and I expected more. Light and watery it detracts from the overall feel. Average mouthfeel that could be better I think.
Drinkability: A truly charming brew on Cask, along with the ilk of like-minded brews from Durham, Hop Back, Ossett, and Roosters et al .this is one of those new breed of light bodied yet hoppy UK Bitters that beg to be quaffed ad infinitum. It is so easy to make this one an all night beer if you want it to be, if you dont pay attention you may not even have a say in the choice, because it is oh so very easy to loose count and forget how many you have had at times!
Overall: Im a big fan of Pictish Brewers Gold, and judging by the numerous awards that this beer has picked up at CAMRA Beer Festivals, I am not the only one.
