The California Common is a style born here in the Bay Area, the benchmark beer of which is Anchor Steam. Our version, The Classic, is a reflection of our respect for its history, and is brewed with 100% California malts from Admiral Maltings. Full flavored with fresh grain aromas and that distinctive steam yeast character, The Classic finishes with a pronounced woody bitterness from all Northern Brewer hops.

Pours golden copper in color with a beautiful, two finger thick froth of white foam atop. A fair amount of lacing as you drink. Carbonation looks spot on. Aroma is fairly subtle... grassy with some lemon, caramel, grain and an earthy spice. The malts/yeast hit the tongue first; buttery grains mixed with the distinctive steam yeast profile followed by a grassy, citrusy, spicy hoppiness that lingers on the tongue. Finishes crisp and dry. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with lively carbonation and some chewiness. Another impressive offering from Old Kan. Drinkable with decent complexity, a great addition to the category. Definitely a lot more hop-forward than Anchor Steam, which is the benchmark beer of the style.
