It changed. The 2024 version is only 6,5% abv. in a 500 ml can. No more sugar added compared to the old version.
All beer lovers and specially Belgians know can storage is the best for beer as it protects the hops against lights and does not spoil beer with side-tastes..
Pours nicely, amber, clear small bubble, medium-high carbonated 2-3 finger white head
Smell, wet dog hair malts.
Taste, salty, herbal bitterness.
Moutfeel a bit thin.
Had better recollections about this one.

 

 

Went to a supermarket in Stein for lunch yesterday. A quick hop over the border after work and had to check out the beer selection, which was pretty good.

0,5L can. It's in a can, so I bought a can. Belgians mostly don't do cans. We do bottles. Exept for defunct lagers. You want to be associated with that? No. So we do bottles. But I'm in the Netherlands, so cans are fine.

Bock beers used to be common in Belgium, but they lost out to pils. No mainstream brewery brews one in Belgium. I remember always finding them in the Netherlands and up untill yesterday, this hasn't changed.

Served in my trusty "Seef" tumbler.
On opening the can, ambient odour of sweet sweet malts, citrus and, I think, some hops.
Beer has a fully transparent rusty orange colour with a compact head. Rustic carbonation.
Head collapses quick.
Scent gives flacky sweet, slightly caramelised malt with apple scented detergent and arteficial lemon.
On first taste malts dominate: burnt sugar and tea. The sugar persists and combines with very faint hints of arteficial apple and lemon and some bread.
Aftertaste is slightly dry with more arteficial apple and more generic white bread. Sweet malts are reintroduced at the end.
Mouthfeel is slightly sticky and dry. Reminds me a bit of caramelised melon. And I never had one of those. Why would I?

Far too sweet for me. Not blown away. I am more impressed with their lager.

Drank the Grolsch Lentebok out of a 500 ml can. Bought it for 1.49 € at a dutch supermarket. Grolsch Lentebok is a spring bock but is available all year round. Its says 7,0% ABV on the can. This bock is sweetened with sugar. I tasted that sugar and some pleasant citrus flavors that must come from the hops. The aftertaste has a light bitterness. The drinkability is good and I didnt taste the 7% ABV at all.
Good spring bock from the Netherlands!

 

 

It smells very refreshing, probably due to the added sugar. This sugar is too dominating in the taste however. It could have been used to balance the typical malty bock flavour, but they've overdone it and now it tastes like malt with sugar on top. A liquid tea biscuit. All in all still a refreshing drink, but it simply lacks "beerness" now.
