Brewed since the middle ages in the north-central town of Einbeck, Germany, “bock” beer was likely named by thirsty Bavarians whose southern dialect conflated “Einbeck” for “ein bock, bitte!” Waldmann’s bock hues to tradition with its malty, lightly hopped, garnet-brown mix of Munich malts, a classic Bavarian bock lager yeast and an extra long boil to add caramel tones. So good that just “ein” bock may not be enough!

32 oz crowler from Chaz.

Absolutely beautiful color on this one, garnet ruby with brilliant clarity. Large creamy light tan head. Very appealing.

Sweet, dark fruit aroma with some caramel. Flavor follows suit, not much hop character at all. Toasty and smooth.

Medium-full bodied. This one drank stronger than its weight. There was no ABV listed on the crowler and I would have guessed it was closer to 6-7%. Not quite doppelbock territory, but close. Paired it with some grilled rack of lamb for dinner and it was great!

Very tall and very fizzy off-white-to-tan head that noisily recedes to a thick bubbly, airy cap with short lacing in a couple of minutes, and then a few minutes later a center island of bubbles and an airy bubbly ring with no lacing. The beer itself is ruby-brown, clear, with an abundance of tiny bubbles. Nice looking bock; the only downgrade is the quickly receding fizzy head.

The aroma is bread, toast, dried sweet figs, slight spice.

The initial sip tastes of figs and raisins, toast and dark bread. Shortly after, there is a drying feel that is not bitter or tart, but in that direction, as perhaps a very mild astringency - I hesitate to use that word since it can convey something I don't intend. Perhaps just mildly drying is better. All the while retaining its inherent sweetish, toasty malty underpinnings. The flavor has a lot going on. The light spiciness mentioned in the aroma; a sweet caramel or sweet figs. Toast. Dark (German) bread. This is a very tasty traditional bock. The finish is somewhat sweet, as is the aftertaste, with the previously mentioned flavors remaining.

The mouth feel has a substantial body.

Overall, tasty and well-brewed. Brewed to the German style without the need to Americanize it. That's one of the things I like about Waldmann's beers - authenticity.

Looks as it should. Great visual clarity and a decent cap of foam, along with excellent lacing in the glass.

Nose is neutral, but there’s a vinuous is (and even darker grape-like) character which is a bit more rare to encounter in the style.

Lighter sweetness, along with some (very light) tart, tangy character. The vinuous character is more apparent at the end of the drink, and adds both depth and balance.

This is something of a lighter rendition of the style at 5.3%, but it’s a very good one, and worth checking out if you can.

tested from a 750ml crowler can. dated March 18, 2021
nice looking beer, Dark amber (brownish) body that is reddish with a strong light behind the mug. Nice tall, fine, very light tan head that lasts for a while.
Taste is caramel, a hint of spice, maybe a hint of floral hops, a micro hint of roastytoasty, a little dark bread too. plenty of carbonation. the beer gets smoother if you let it sit for while. slightly sweet
Decent body/mouth feel for the ABV

I think this beer is slightly better than it was 3 years ago

750ml crowler can. Stamped on label is 'MAR 18 2021'.
Amber brown colored body, with a ruby backlit color. Light tan head. No lacing.
Aroma of roasted and caramel malts and fruity hops. Spiced caramel apple.
Taste is almost zippy, with fruity and spicy hops working with smooth caramel malts. Lager twang. Dark bread base.
Medium mouth feel, with a touch of syrup. Good carbonation.
Solid flavors, and a little lacking in the aroma, this beer is so seldom encountered these days. The expressive caramel malts are the star here. The beer expresses German authenticity. Beautiful body color, but the surface is rising bubbles instead of lasting head. Might be better on tap, as the crowler is always a compromise.
