Poured into a 0.5l at the brewery.

This dunkelweizen is very dark and smooth. Heavy aromas of chocolate and wheat. Has a lot of similar flavors to a milk stout, but more light and refreshing.

From the brewer's notes, I conclude that this beer contains no actual chocolate (despite the name), but rather Chocolate Wheat Malt.

Black with barely visible fine bubbles near the edges, ruby red just above the glass base with a back-light. Otherwise, completely impenetrable. A tall khaki head, thick and creamy with dispersed large bubbles which result in a pitted surface as it recedes with no lacing. The weizen glass shows off this beer nicely.

Aroma hints of sweetness. Banana, slightly spicy, caramel. Faint chocolate and coffee.

Taste brings sweet banana, caramel, and a balancing bitterness of dark chocolate with subdued coffee. The tanginess of the wheat is present, but not as much to the fore as might be expected. The flavor is rich and varied. The finish is a mix of the sweet banana/caramel and the bitter chocolate/coffee, with the overall balance slipping a bit toward the sweet. The aftertaste leaves the pleasant flavors coating the tongue. The chocolate becomes a bit more evident, and the banana less so, as the beer warms.

The feel is smooth and not quite thick enough to be called viscous.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot (but, with the name, I was expecting the chocolate to be more prominent).

L: Bright dark brown with brilliant brown edges under a lacy 2" light tan cap with good retention.

S: has some dark chocolate aromas, dark grains, hint wheat, slight banana.

T: Luscious chocolate, trace banana, traces of caramel, wheat, nuts, mild plus bitter and mild minus fermentation notes.

F: very creamy, medium full body, medium minus carbonation

O: Luscious, flavorful dark weizen with the chocolate balancing well with the existing flavors.

Crowler can. Fill date marked as 'MAR 11 2019'. Website has current ABV% at 4.6.
Dark brown colored body. One finger light tan head, with good eye appeal, that slowly disappears and leaves a thin cap and ring. A few spots of lacing are left behind.
Aroma of dark malts, chocolate, and wheat malt.
Taste follows the smell with lots of dark malts (toffee like), heavy chocolate presence, and the wheat tang from the wheat malt. There is a slight bitterness at the end that is similar to a coffee bitterness (but a coffee flavor is not prominent). The tang of the wheat malt is a little similar to unsweetened cherry.
Medium mouth feel, very good for a lager. Texture is smooth. Very good carbonation.
Very well put together dark wheat lager with flavorful chocolate, and with the wheat malts being very expressive (reminds me of wheat grain dust, in the nostrils, stirred up while cleaning out grain bins).
