A 750ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2017. Purchased ages ago from M&S. Comes in a decorative cardboard sleeve; described on the label as Greenwich ale aged for 6 months in Monnet Cognac barrels.
A: Poured into a tulip. A dark reddish-brown colour with good clarity and light carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of raisins, dried fruit, mild brown sugar, subtle roasted grain, ale yeast, faint wood and a twinge of warming brandy. An initial metallic twang, though this fades after a while. Decent but underwhelming for the style.
T: Tastes of fruity malt with notes of dried fruit, light brown sugar, vague caramel, mild roasted grain, ale yeast, subtle wood, faint stewed leaves and a hint of cognac. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and decent body. Could be thicker for the style. Aftertaste of fruity malt, mild caramel/sugar, ale yeast and a touch of wood.
O: OK but nothing amazing. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour possess a decent blend of malt, sweetness and booze. Subpar body for the style. For a barrel-aged beer this underdelivers. Drinkable but not worth paying over the odds for. No need to seek it out.
