This has a hazy, light copper to amber countenance, with honey amber highlights (SRM 13-35). The head is short lived and loose, forming a 1" beige foam and no lace before retreating to a thin vail of fog within a Pretentious Glass Co. Snifter.
Aromas of toffee and dried figs play well in contract to floral notes. All are too subdued for the style.
It is quite biter, more of the American style than English. While hop forward, toffee and spiced rum are evident. Light red wine and oak tannins are obvious, and build with warming. The finish is long and fairly strong.
It has a full body and sticky texture. Alcohol is more prominent than expected, although the heat is mild. It has an astringent and scratchy carbonation.
While a decent high-octane beer, it falls short of what a Barleywine can achieve, not to mention its namesake character - Matt Foley (Chris Farley's genius creation). Nevertheless, I polished off the entire 32oz crowler while sitting out back one cool mid-Spring afternoon, as the frogs chirped and birds bathed before the coming rain.
