This beer pours pitch black. There's a beautiful 2 finger tan head. The head retention is good for such a high ABV beer. As the head forms it looks almost like a nitro pour. There's a nice ring of foam/lacing on the glass.
The nose is very minimal. There's the faintest hint of malts, and licorice. It doesn't get better as it warms.
Lots of dark chocolate up front from the malts. This changes, on the back to a licorice flavor. There's also a pleasing bitterness to this beer from the hops - it's listed as 70 IBU on the crawler.
The body is a bit thin in my book, to be honest. The hops do linger in my throat.
Not bad, but there's ups and downs to this beer. I wish it were more balanced.
