Received from @Wesmantooth. Reviewed 3/28/20. Thanks Corey!
Handwritten on front label “Date 2/22 btld”. 500 mL capped bottle. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.25.
First pour – Medium amber (SRM 12), hazy.
Body – Deep Amber (SRM 15), murkily opaque. When held to direct light, ruby and translucent only at top edge.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.5 cm, aggressive center pour), dark tan with pinkish cast, medium density, fizzy, short retention, diminishing to a three mm crown fed by effervescence and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Distinct cherry aroma, no malt, no hops, no yeastiness
Flavor – 4 – Moderately sour with weak notes of cherry and chocolate(!). No alcohol (6.3 % ABV as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. Aftertaste is slightly sour with a medium hang time.
Palate – 4 – Medium, watery, medium carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Very good barrel-aged wild/sour ale. The color was a pleasant surprise from the expected straw shades. The chocolate, while surprising, goes well with the cherry and is well-balanced with the sourness. Any tannin or vanillin from the wood is too light to notice. This reminds me of Mort Subite Kriek back in the days when it wasn’t mass-produced. Uncluttered label.
