A trip to Sugar Creek malt farm yielded an intriguing ingredient: Crystal rye malt. We reached out to Garrett at Streetside Brewery in Cincinnati, and he pitched the idea that you are holding in your hand. We did our damnedest to sour this brew with 19 months in barrel and multiple doses of brettanomyces, but our strains didn't stand a chance against the potent abv and residual sugar in this unique rye wine.

It appears to be a 12 ounce can. I decanted into a tulip glass. It pours dark brown with garnet highlights when held to the light. It is topped with a thin, mocha head that leaves little lacing. The cabernet comes through first and foremost. I get some caramel and brown sugar notes. Hints of vanilla. The cabernet is more subdued in the flavor. I still get a vinous vibe, but the caramel and vanilla shine a little more. Some ripe red fruit in the finish. A bit dry. Smooth mouthfeel. Nice beer from a defunct brewery that was card only. I cursed them for that for I am cash only.

"ALL GOOD BEER BEGINS WITH A STORY. A trip to Sugar Creek malt farm yielded an intriguing ingredient: Crystal rye malt. Pours a murky mahogany with a short-lived tan head. Kind of an ugly beer, but intriguing all at the same time

Nose of acetic acid/vinegar and dark dried fruits.

Mouthfeel is surprisingly medium to medium heavy. Probably from the beta-glucans from the rye.

Taste very much follows the nose with dark fruit and malt followed by that brettanomyces wet hay/funk/bitterness. A restrained tartness finishes the beer and carries over into the aftertaste.

Overall a very interesting beer from a brewery that sadly isn't around any longer. Quite reminiscent of Liefman's Goudenband (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/283/773/) only higher in alcohol.

From a 12-oz can, pours a murky maroonish brown with a thin tan head quickly fizzing out. Smells of deep complex malt and dark cherries. Tastes smooth, dark malt, rye malt, dark fruit, alcohol - but not hot - and slightly sour near the end. Hop bitterness balances out the heaviness of the malt. Full bodied, velvety smooth, moderate carbonation. It's too late to support this brewery, but there are still examples of their fine work on the shelves out there. Find it while you can.

Very unique and interesting take on the rye/barleywine style. Pours thick and syrupy with minimal head that reduces into a very mildly carbonated urbooze-consistency liquid. On the nose you get a lot of the Cabernet barrel along with some chocolate and dark fruit and a hint of smoke. Upon tasting you start with red wine that fades into dark fruit and stouty notes and then fades further with a hint of sour cherry and bret. I feel like this is a beer that would take very well to aging as it is not too far off from being one of the more drinkable beers in this style. If you're looking for it in the wild it comes in packs of 2 so you can taste one and save one for aging if you so desire, which I think is perfect since this isn't the type of beer that I would drink a decent quantity of but would be great for sharing on an early fall evening.
