Pours a frothy semi thick dark almost black 1/2 finger head, jet black thick beer, med to lower retention, a little lacing
Nose surprisingly starts with nutty aroma, big nutty coffee, a bit of roasted coffee and roasted malt, fair baking spices and nougat, cocoa, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla icing on moist chocolate cake, some fudge, cocoa powder, very faint bourbon, more rich vanilla as it warms
Taste tastes like a candy bar, chocolate covered cherry, big rich chocolate like mid-tier cocoa, fudgey, into some roast, bitter roast and strong dark coffee, a bit of char and smoke, baking spices from the dark malts more than barrel, little barrel character with cookie dough notes, very little bourbon again which is sad since it was a Buffalo Trace barrel, rich vanilla, again that vanilla icing on moist chocolate cake, some burnt caramel, hint of anise and other baking spices, semi sweet semi dry mild sticky finish, higher bitterness and spicy hop with dark roast
Mouth is fuller bod, med carb, smooth alcohol
Overall not bad, again base beer is pretty good although a bit heavy on the roast and spicy hop, adjuncts were good between the cocoa, vanilla, and coffee, although the coffee did turn a bit acrid burnt when combined with the malts, but the real disappointment is the lack of barrel, like a waste of Buffalo Trace barrel, I can only assume this was a third or fourth fill or something, or one barrel was blended back with a bunch of the fresh beer.
