Pours deep amber, coppery coloration with a small, fizzy head. Smell is dominated by ginger and ginseng, with some light grainy malt also coming through. Taste follows the nose, with the ginger/ginseng being most noticeable, but also a light sourness from the kimchi cultures, with a bready, grainy malt presence in the background. Finishes with a very light bitterness and some of that kimchi sourness lingering in the aftertaste. Medium body and carbonation.
This is certainly an odd one, but not exactly unusual by Freigeist's standards. Even though I thought that this was slightly better on tap, it still doesn't work quite as well as some of their other experimental beers. Not bad, mind you, certainly interesting, but it just doesn't have that oomph to really make it work. Nicely balanced, but perhaps a little bland.
