amazing stuff from two of my favorites, a presumably rare bottle shared very generously with me on a windy rainy chilly afternoon in front of a cozy wood fire, amazing vibes and context for a beer like this. a brown berliner type thats a little stronger, not a common style variant to say the least, but count on these guys to resurrect such a thing. braunbier, i will look for more of that from others. looks sort of oud bruin-esque, thinnish, reddish, and crowned by less than an inch of lasting and very airy big bubbles, super lively from the bottle, slight sediment as we drink down on it. this is really unique, almost an altbier vibe to me, nutty and kilned and malty and not that sweet for its color, cola and dr pepper notes in the aroma, clove and wet soil and roots, real piquant and old tasting, musty wood, mellow funk, lemony bacteria thats well developed, lots of acid, notes of birch and iodine, raisin and dried cherry, the complexity keeps coming, waves and waves in the nose, truly insane. the flavor is cool, i get even more of the oak, funk, and an almost lambic vibe through the sourness. leather, dried banana, red wine vinegar, very oud bruin here, clean lemon too, cranberry, light smoke, cedar, toffee, wet woods, old port, tree bark, maple, and some distinctly german grain. amazing stuff, bubbly and complex but also light to drink, warms up extremely well, and frankly blew my mind. a favorite from a super beery weekend with the homie, looks like maybe there is more than one beer in this sauerland project, need to track down the other(s)! freigeist never disappoints!
