From notes 9/7/13: Pours a murky, medium brown with orange edges when held to the light producing a huge, 4+ finger, frothy, tan, lasting head that leaves clumpy, sticky streaks and webs of lace. Aroma is malty as an Altbier should be but approaches a more hoppy balance than the style demands, not that I disapprove being a card carrying hophead. Aroma: orange and earthy hops mingle with butterscotch, brown sugar, caramel, a scattering of dark fruits and smoke with a hint of woody vanilla. Taste: brown bread, caramel and toffee with floral and earthy with an orange pith bitterness and astringency followed by hints of wood and smoke. Peppery finish swims with a malty/hop balance. Aftertaste is a lightly astringent and bitter maltiness. Makes me think of what an Altbier produced by Green Flash Brewery might taste like. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a moderate carbonation, silky but with prickly spice, dry and drawing.

-pours a cloudy ruby-brown with a medium,foamy,sand-coloured head
-medium carbonation visible
-low to medium bitterniss for the style
-medium carbonation
-medium body
-slight alcohol noticeable
Not nearly as hoppy as a true Altbier Sticke, but on it's own it's a really nice Beer.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep brown color with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, brown sugar, some fruit and some hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of brown sugar, maple and some fruit. Then some breadiness comes in from a hearty malt character. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is sweet and slightly bready.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.

Color of dark prune juice with a faint tan blanket on top.

I smell fig, grape, oak, leather, and light smoke.

Taste has woody smoke presenting first, with prune and leather following up.

Feel is surprisingly light and not boozy in spite of the flavors, and very dry.

Poured from the bottle into a stange glass.

Deep dark chestnut red, nearly mahogany brown colored but far more red than brown for the body appearance. Creamy somewhat but bubbly two finger light tan head, and good thick ring like lacing. Great looking beer in this glass.

Not your usual alt on the aroma. Caramel and thicker toffee notes, more so of a sweet raisin quality. Hop sensing herbal tones and some bit of spicy quality too. Real nice aroma, and a touch of dryness but also some thick malt classic doppel sweetness.

Delicious simple palate. Light caramel tones, and mild sweetness but manages a bit of doppel warmth in the mid palate. Hop and grain forward mix of dry earth and herbs. Airy and flour dry almost finish, with spicy tones of clove and some tannic nutty heat as well. Mild sensing fruit, less sweet than expected and a bit of lost raisin in favor of red berried fruit slightly.

An interesting take on an alt, with some good fruity tones and in between doppel like flavors. Nicely made brew.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich, dark amber hue with a moderate haze and a finger of creamy tan foam that leaves a nice lace on the glass. It's quite attractive!

Smell: sweetly malty with plenty of caramel and a light and soothing smoky aroma. I like the smoke, but this is one sticky sticke.

Taste: sweetly malty but with an earthy hop character and plenty of bitterness. The smoke is there, but is subdued. An interesting combination; it's not bad but I think the hoppiness doesn't work well here.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: at first I thought this beer just didn't suit my palate, but the more I drink the more it starts to grate on me. Some may like it but the harshness of the hops combined with the sticky sweetness is just too much for me.

Front labels this as a "doppelsticke alt", back describes it as a subtly-smoked/extra-hoppy version of an old ale. Sounds like a good fall-ish ale for this not so fall-ish Sunday afternoon.

A - 500ml into a big ol Duvel glass. Color is something like murky bog brown with dark reddish highlights. A beige head retains as a mostly full cap and bubbly thick ring. A few lace bits left here and there.

S - Smoked caramel, nut bread, biggish earthy and herbal hop, toasted malt, cola. Reminiscent of a scotch ale or a doppelbock. Big malts with apparent smoke and hoppage that don't overpower and are decently integrated.

T - Earthy/herbal/resinous hops deliver more of a bitter wallop here, perhaps some spicy hop there as well. Caramel, molasses and nutty malts making up most of the rest. Smoke helps balance out the sweetness but really fades into the background here. Light fruity tones throughout.

M - Big malts with a heavy and almost syrupy feel, decent+ample carbonation, biggish hop bitterness feels kind of clashing. A touch of alcohol. Definitely a bit of a sipper.

O - A decent amount of complexity and will hit the spot if you're looking for a big sweetish malty sipper, but the big hops don't make for the best combo. The bitterness and hop flavors just seem out of place here. Kinda wish the hops were toned down and the smoke was emphasized a bit more.
