Purchased fresh from the brewer. 375 ml, into tiny (180 ml) Chimay chalice. High pour gives birth to a semi-opaque (translucent at the edges), dark reddish-brown body overlain by thin yet well formed tan head that shortly fades to a soapy film. The nose is rich coffee and evident alcohol, significant chocolate qualities from roasted malt, caramel and bread aromas indicating usage of specialty malts, subdued pruney/raisiny esters, oaken undertones, and some herbal and spicy hop aroma. Silky and oily mouthfeel that seems to be a trademark of Freigeist imperial stouts, with apparently soft carbonation trapped inside the thick body. The beer is sweet on the palate with rich chocolate flavor intermingling with roasted coffee beans and evident, warming alcohol which is not necessarily a negative feature in imperial stout. Some woody notes. The moderately sweet finish is strongly herbal & spicy from hops, with malt-balancing hoppy bitterness and alcohol warmth. In short: A somewhat robust, chocolate-coffeish and alcoholic imperial stout.
