some stoke, some perplexity, some frustration, some satisfaction. if ive had freigeist beer in cans before, i was wasted and dont recall, so i was shocked and pumped to see this one. then i noticed it was made by urban chestnut, who i love, but i had no idea this wasnt from germany, maybe i should have seen the product of the usa announcement on the top of the label sooner, neat that they do that, and that we get this fresh and perhaps less expensively, but it makes me feel like something is less authentic, i dont know why, and id trust those folks to brew my beer too, but i still kind of feel weird about it. that ends instantly as everything about this is lovely, pretty color, rich mahogany with some shine and a whipped looking white head, deep even for this style, looks awesome! aroma of light smoke, raisin, some astringency, cooked sugar, toffee, dark bread, and even like a pretzel dough or something, pretty layered, still very german, especially on the yeast side, some herbal hops for balance. the taste is there too, some acidity at the end breaking down the richness but i still love how complex it is, chestnut, roast, brown sugar, maple, acorn, pumpernickel, fresh bagel, really nice. drier than its color or malt heaviness would indicate, and actually very drinkable. good grain character overall, some yeast presence most of the way, intentional water elements, this is old world but refined from a modern perspective i think. nice stuff despite the confusion, and to be fair, the execution by urban chestnut is as good as the recipe is by freigeist.
