Even the highest pour fails to create anything but thin, yet well-formed, beige head that fades to a stable cloth atop of deep amber to reddish-coppery body. Swirls create sheets of lace quickly broken into patches sliding down the walls. The nose is herbal liquor, caramel and honey-like sweetness, and prominent notes of vanilla obviously imparted by aging on oak chips. Medium bodied beer with low carbonation is less sweet than the aroma suggested and fruity on the palate, which probably results from maturation on oak chips soaked with fruit-distillate. Noticeable oaken flavor. Warming alcohol and peppery spiciness (originating from hops or yeast by-products or even actual spices used) deliver warm, relatively dry finish with light hoppy bitterness. (375 ml, freshness date reads March 2012, into the Struise 150 ml tulip).
In short: a herbal-fruity-oaky, sweet yet dry beer with attractive vanilla scent.
