this is sick, one of the best takes on berliner ive ever encountered, and a really remarkable beer overall, aged 2.5 years in barrels, the way the label is printed we thought it said 25 years, which would be insane, but this isnt lacking woody maturity, thats for sure! done in collaboration with bahnhof and schneeeule, awesome. i cant believe how delicate this is for one, or how amazingly yeast complex it is, so much going on, but still a berliner. cool packaging on this, sort of looks like some of the champagne method beers theyve done before, is this that too? sure could be, high rising pure white head on the pour and tons of consistent big bubbles makes it sure look and feel like champagne, and there isnt much more body than that here either now, still wheaty but light. the nose is real funky, the brett is killer, really farmy and well developed, this is crazy dry right away to me, like fast even to smell, horsey a little bit, some lemon, cereal grain character, oak and light vanilla, floral springy bright white wine, unique almost saline minerality, mouthwatering for sure. some clean acidity when i taste it but its not overly acidic, which is the beauty of treating a kettle sour like this, the bacteria doesnt run away with it over time because its killed in the boil, maybe some addition tartness from barrel time and such, but this isnt an acid bomb at all, its refreshingly puckery is all, more funk than acid for sure, the brett is epic, and this hits kind of like natural wine, fruity like that too, absolutely bone dry. the wheat is still the core of this, there is wood, an almost lambic wild aspect, and its all so cohesive. never really had a berliner with this level of maturity and depth but also refinement, the mouthfeel is amazing with all the carbonation, really well conditioned, and a beer i hope to drink again. it doesnt really show its age at all, 2017 was a long time ago, and with all the barrel time too, but its still fresh and breezy to me. this remains one of the most interesting and unsung breweries in the game, so thankful for this one, a gift from a buddy, i know it was spendy, cool move. positively adored it! one of a kind.
