A: Sour lacto aroma, coupled with a long linger amount of smoke.

A: Hazy straw color with prominent head. Some lacing evident.

T: Lots of lacto sourness, intermixed with smoke. There is some bready grainy character evident, but finishes a savory smokey.

M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation; drinks clean.

O: Interesting interplay between smoke and sour, given Berliner’s super light effervescent style. Solid, but not amazing, could use a bit more complexity or a food accompaniment.

Tastes like a smoked beer and a berliner blended together; which do not go well together, in my opinion.

Interesting style, tasty beer, assuming it's a good representative of the "smoked sour" style

A: The beer is a very cloudy yellow, a bright straw color. There is just the slightest thin layer of head as the glass appears in front of me and it's swiftly gone within moment.

S: It smells fruity, sweet and citrussy, with a little spice and a pleasant hint of yeastiness. The smoke scent is subdued, however, and I prepare to be disappointed.

T: The first sips are all citrus. The overwhelming flavor is lemon, but pleasantly so. It reminds me (positively) of a maltier Curious Traveler Shandy. The tartness and the sweetness are well-balanced. While a good beer, I feel a bit cheated, due to the lack of smokiness. As I drink more, however, the sweetness subsides and a more forceful tartness emerges, and then, almost like magic, by the midpoint of my glass, the sour begins to recede altogether and the smoke bursts forth, a delicious woody flavor reminiscent of a good Scotch gradually becomes dominant. I pause, and offer my companions a second taste. They hesitate, having not cared for the initial lemon/tartness, but the look on their faces when they give in was worth the effort -- they can't believe this is the same beer as before. One describes it as simply the most complex beer he's ever tried.

M: This beer is gentle and goes down easily, not very boozy. Despite the lack of head, there's a pleasant fizziness throughout the draft, in both its sour and smoky incarnations.

O: I can't praise this beer enough. The layers of citrus and Scotch are invisible to the eye but somehow coexist in perfect harmony. I'm generally fond of sours but love a good rauchbier and this collaboration is an incredible union of the two. Neither the sour nor the smoke of this particular beer should intimidate anyone, as it really should be able to be appreciated by just about any craft beer aficionado.
