Branded Black Porter is an example of a beer that starts strong but doesnt go the distance. The distance I speak of is a pint. Branded Black goes no further than about four ounces. It starts with a smart porterish aroma emanating from a slender tan head. It is solid black with a decent flush of lace. Initially it presents an all around porterish flavor with the customary properties of toffee and toast.
But like a sprinter in a marathon, it soon tires and comes to a halt. The carbonation escapes, the aroma grows acrid and medicinal, and the mouthfeel is strained and astringent to the last. The beer also lacks body and the flavor is lopsided and doesnt kick in until the aftertaste.
If Branded Black sustained its initial properties, it would be a nice pub porter. But the flavor tips too easily from bold to bland and too much is lost over the course of 16 ounces to salvage its drinkability.
