Sitting at the window, I cannot see the Columbia River at all through this beer--black on black with a thin tan head, served in a pint glass in spite of the 8.5% ABV. This was one of my wife's favorite of our week long trek in Washington and Oregon (17 pubs/breweries/100 beers), so a fair recommendation.
Big roast malt and dark, fruity esters, black currants, aged raisins in the nose. Alcohol comes through a bit as well. Bourbon barrel aged, and the oak is significant in this one but not overwhleming. Slightly bitter on the back of the tongue, and enough hop to just balance this monster malt. Smooth and filling enough to chew, but no oily feel that can come from some imperials and/or barrel aging.
Feels quite appropriate in a pint class though this style is often in a goblet. Though, we did have to order nachos to let the affects wear off before driving back to Portland after lunch.
