Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with maple syrup and coffee added. Poured from a can into a MadTree tulip. The pour is fairly well-carbonated for a barrel-aged beer with a solid 2 fingers of tan foam. Average retention. Not as viscous as I expected. The nose has a lot of toffee, cocoa, vanilla, and toasted oak.
Full body with an oily feel and a rich flavor. There is a lot of maple on the front end of this beer. Usually these "coffee-maple-syrup-bourbon-barrel-aged-beasts" are all roasty and bourbony with a hint of maple to balance out the coffee. This one throws the maple at you first - and I dig it. It's the coffee you have to search for. But no worries, there is plenty of roast to go around so it can afford to be subtle. At mid-palate, you get those delightful barrel notes: toasted oak, vanilla, and toffee. Towards the back of the palate, some alcohol warmth creeps in as well as a nice hit of sarsaparilla.
Overall, a stellar beer. I have had one other beer from Fretboard (at a bottle share) and I really enjoyed that one too. My only gripe is that the feel was a bit thin for all that flavor, but that could have been because of the serving temperature. Nevertheless, I'll definitely have to plan a trip to Blue Ash the next time I go brewery-hoppin' around the Queen City.

From the growler via Jungle Jim's Eastgate in a snifter. This fantastic RIS
pours a rugged and murky blackish brown with subtle cola highlights and a
very nice head of tan foam that subsides to a thick ring, thin wispy pool, and
showcases some very nice lacing. Nose of coffee, maple, earthy malts, subtle
char, and a touch of marshmallow. Flavors hit the spot with a rich coffee and
dark maple flavor that is balanced without being overpowering. Layered with flavor
the taste of marshmallow and deeply roasted malts with a touch of char lead
into a touch of barrel note with vanilla and subtle cream. Excellent mouth feel; light
carbonation that is just enough to lift this beast, full body, and a rich coffee finish
sweetened with maple.
Absolutely excellent! A malt lovers dream. One of the best stouts I
have had this year.
Of note, when the little lady buys two growlers of the same brew
I was intrigued, when I tasted this I was convinced, a winner in
brewers profile.
Cheers
