We took our “Hop Revenge” New England-Style Black IPA with its boatload of Citra and Galaxy hops and added lactose, vanilla and cocoa.

Holy flavor clashing batman! Drinking this, before drain pouring the rest, felt like being caught in a war between tropical ipa and chocolate cream stout. The result is a soapy chocolate with bitter hops that don't fit the black ale it is a part of, with smoke, vanilla, coffee, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, and a lot of booze burn. Texture is also oily, and jagged with hop texture, but body is thin and frothy too. Smell was better, but still lots of clashing going on. Disaster

Honestly not sure what to make of this one. I'm rating it off of the last can I had of it, and it may be better now since the chocolate and lactose have faded a little. A good hoppy black ale can be great-look at Pipeworks Black Tuna for the best example -but I think the lactose and cocoa are too much for this beer. I remember being completely baffled by the combination on the first ones I tried of this. The hops and sweetness fought it out and nobody won. Letting some of the additives fade made it more presentable, but in no ways is this a great beer, or even a good beer. Passable at best, and I know I rate higher than the norm on most beers, but my ultimate review stands on if I would buy it again. With this one, that ain't happening.

16oz can, shared with my wife. Dated 11/09/18. Cloudy brown body with a foamy head that ends up as big brown bubbles as it eventually fades to nothing - kind of weird. Aroma is more NEIPA-like with tropical fruit hops and some very faint chocolate. Intriguing tastes battle on the palate going back and forth between tropical mango, passion fruit, citrus, & pineapple vs waves cocoa, vanilla, and faint roasted coffee. Full and creamy body, tart resinous finish; cocoa and passion fruit ride out the finish with some hop burn on the throat. Unfortunately, this doesn't quite work for me. I like the battle of flavor but they never seem to marry together as one cohesive flavor. Everything else I've had from this brewery has been very solid, but this one didn't do it for me.
