Giving dessert drinks a run for their money, Variant Brewing doubles down on vanilla, coconut, macaroon and maple for a stout that truly is one for all time.
And with that namesake, For All Time kicks off with a dark brown, russet pour, off-black at its onset. As a frothy crown defines the brim, the beer soon falls still like brandy in the glass. An immediate impression of dessert strikes the nose as the robust fragrances of chocolate, toffee, maple, vanilla, coffee and cream start to drift onto the senses. Deviantly sweet in its early tone, the first sip reveals caramel, toffee, molasses, maple, chocolate and sweet cream.
With those heavy malt influences standing strong on the middle palate, the sugary sweetness leaves room for more savory flavors to build upon. Nutty, coffee-like and toasted with nearly pastry-like flavors, the beer trends spicy with nuanced flavors of dark fruit, sherry and woodsy spice with a slightly bitter, coffee-like finish.
Full bodied, pleasantly cloying and held as a sipping beer, For All Time finishes malty-rich and with a long and sweet afterglow of vanilla for an overall impression of coffee and cream. It's definitely a stout for those with a serious sweet tooth.
