Pours shiny black (SRM 40+) with a very dark mahogany halo. A thin, delicate ring of light chestnut froth sits above. No film or legs develop, however, tiny spots of lace form distant constellations on a Pretentious Glass Company Imperial snifter.
The aroma has sweet Cognac, charred malt, vanilla, and some ash. Despite the variety of components, it is simple, yet pronounced and elegant.
The flavor opens sweet before transitioning to mildly bitter. Dates, prunes, and some dark chocolate are the first elements to be perceived. The finish is long and mild with a subdued extension of the previously mentioned elements.
The body is dense with a syrupy texture that is extremely smooth and soft. Carbonation is almost still with a fine prickle of pins. The alcohol has a light burning sensation.
Elegance is the best description for this sublimely relaxing beer.
