On tap at Mortalis Brewing in Avon, NY.
This one pours a very light and clear golden orange, with basically no head or lacing.
This smells weirdly of stale hop bitterness, caramel syrup, and boozy heat.
This is kind of a mess, unfortunately. There’s some odd and stale hop bitterness coming through here – odd for an English barleywine. There’s some syrupy caramel, and a cheap whiskey flavor – it’s all just very flat on the palate.
There’s very little carbonation here, and that does not help this, as the beer is oddly thin and bitter for the style.
I wasn’t sure what to expect here, as Imprint is almost primarily known for hyper-fruited sours. It’s clear that it’s going to be quite a while, maybe an eternity, before they are known for barrel aged barleywines.
