For the rum barrel aged version of this beast we selected half a dozen of some super rare Australian rum barrels we found in which the beer was aged for approximately 14 months.

Pours a dark brown color with a minimal head that disappears quickly. Aroma of alcohol and roasted malts. Taste is sweet vanilla and caramel and a pleasant alcohol warmth. Thick and creamy.

Smell gives off a bit of ripe banana along with dark chocolate. Taste is a wave of bitter, dark chocolate that mellows out with sweet, rummy backbone into chewy cacao, molasses and more banana pudding. Lingering rum warmth, but very smooth.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque in the glass with a fine, one finger khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, rum, banana, raisins, plums and molasses; surprisingly fruit forward. Flavor is toasted malt, rum, raisins, golden molasses, plums and a hint of chocolate; rum finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess; nice mouth feel. Somewhat sweeter and more rum forward than a domestic barreled stout; the profile is closer to a blended strong ale with both barleywine and stout components. Very flavorful, the stout malt takes a backseat to the rum barreling, but is substantial enough to support he other flavors well. I love the profile with barleywine-like fruit in a stout base. The rum enhances the fruit flavors (or is mostly responsible for them, perhaps). This is an excellent barreled stout that has an unusual profile, but very nicely made and aged. Not sure why this isn't getting more love here. Looks, smells and tastes great. I'd like to see more from these guys. Interestingly, although this is a Greek brewery the bottle states that it is brewed and bottled in Estonia. Interesting flavor and origins.
