I have been burning the midnight oil; I am too busy to enjoy a beverage. True North is a new brewery to me; I did not know I had something from the East Coast. I am using a Stange and the serving temperature is 42 degrees. The pour created a massive three-fingered, foamy, airy, white head with average retention. The somewhat slow dissipation left some lacing on the glass. The color is golden yellow with a light straw hue, charting at SRM 5, and translucent. The appearance of the beer is average for this style.
Nosing the beer, I smell grass, lightly toasted malts, yeasty, light floral esters, and a hint of phenols. Smelling the beer again, I notice a light malty sweetness and a note of pear.
Sipping the beer, this is not a typical Kolsch I have drunk. The flavors begin with a malt profile, characterized by a lightly toasted, malty sweetness and a hint of crackers. The other flavors include pear, grass, yeasty phenols, light floral esters, and a hint of herbal notes.
The mouthfeel is smooth with a light, astringent, crisp finish. The body is light and has medium-plus carbonation.
Final Thought: I enjoy a Kolsch, but this beer didn't scratch that itch. The beer has too much going on with it. I was expecting a crisp, clean beer with those flavors, but I did not get that. The yeasty phenols threw me off, reminded me of a band-aid. Overall, it was okay.
