From a 16 oz. can dated 11/12/2021. Sampled Dec. 19, 2021.
The look is about as dark as it can be with a near jet black color underneath a modest, fading tan head.
The aromas run through a few sensations such as pine, spruce, orange, tangerine, and a light coffee roast. The coffee is actually more subtle.
Medium or better mouthfeel.
The taste is sweet, piney, with a little orange followed by the lower profile coffee character. I found it to be a pleasant beer.

Dark midnight brown color with a 3F head in a tulip.
Mild aroma, pine and spruce.
The body is a bit thin- a thicker body would be better, as in other beers I’ve tasted in t(e style
Roasted malt and pine taste.
Moderately hoppy finish.
I was looking for a bigger malt bill, a hefty malty, accented roasted malt aroma and taste that I have experienced in this style. The heaviness of a black IPA style was missing in this beer.
I’ve enjoyed other beers from True North, and a Black IPA may not be a style that works for them.

An easy pour from a Pint can (canned on 12-10-18) creates a fat finger of rocky light tan froth with long retention and rings of lacing. Semi-opaque dark rosewood brown, almost black.
Smell features piney and citrus hops with roasted malt.
Taste begins semi-dry and bitter from hops and roasted malt (un-malted barley) with oak, grass and chocolate. The middle is almost semi-sweet from caramel malt and less bitter. The long finish quickly returns to semi-dry and bitter with an alcohol bite. The aftertaste lasts with astringent bitter hops and roasted malt. Medium light body with average carbonation, smooth despite the bitterness. The big malt bill tames the bitterness down a bit.
