Foeder Aged Smoked Pale Lager
Inspired by the great, centuries old German rauchbiers, a lager made with grains dried over an open fire. Made with 100% malt from a great American maltser, Sugar Creek Malt. We used Pilsner, Vienna, and German-style Rauchmalz, and old world Franconian smoked Malt made of germinated 2-row barley dried over Indiana Beech wood. Hopped in the kettle with CZ Saaz and DE Tettnang, and fermented with our favorite german lager strain cold, and then lagered in our Missouri oak foeder for 3 months. The result is a beautiful, smooth, and aromatic smoked lager with notes of smoked gouda, light smoldering oak, balanced malt sweetness, while finishing with a clean dryness.

"Smoked Lager." Nabbed a 4-pack at the brewery earlier.
16 fl oz pull-tab can.
The smoke is pungent and well integrated, if a bit harsh. The lager backbone gets drowned out a bit, with barely any 2-row/pale malt coming through. I guess a bit more malty sweetness to counter the smoked malt is needed.
I'd guess the smoke is all from beechwood; I don't get any more specialized woodsy or smokey flavours.
It's great to see Parleaux doing a smoked beer (I think the only other NoLa area brewery that's done one is NoLa Brewing) but this isn't a top tier effort in the style.
Drinkable, though if I'm paying $4/500ml for a smoked beer, I'd sooner drink Schlenkerla.
