16 fl oz can nabbed in 4-pack form at the brewpub yesterday. $14 USD (plus tax) per 4-pack.
"Tmave Pivo." (Czech style dark lager). No ABV is listed on the can, but it's 4.7% ABV per their website.
Served cold into a dimpled mug.
APPEARANCE: Looks gorgeous. A frothy creamy khaki head sticks around a good 10 minutes after the initial pour.
Body colour is a deep dark ruby-brown.
Appears well carbonated. Looks as a tmavy ought to.
AROMA: Cola. Dark bread. Amber malt. Dark/brown malts. Chestnuts. Rich caramelized sugars. Maybe a blip of Saaz spiciness, but it's by no means a hoppy brew in any regard.
One of the most pleasantly malt-forward aromas in a beer I've encountered in a long time.
Promises rich malty beer with clean attenuation.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Nutty and bready with rich caramelized sugars at its core. Throws off hints of cherry, chestnut, pumpernickel, and cola. Specialty chocolate malt lends still more variety of flavour. Sweet but not too sweet, though a bit more Saaz spiciness would be very welcome.
Very well balanced, layering its rich malts neatly so as no to overemphasize any specific part of the whole.
Smooth, wet, full-bodied, filling, not unrefreshing, perfectly carbonated. Fits the "liquid bread" descriptor many give to beer.
OVERALL: Easily one of the better American attempts at a tmave I've tried. Nails the style. This is up there with the best I tried while in the Czech Republic. A must try for any Czech beer fan when in New Orleans.
