Dark and full bodied like the behemoth himself. A moderate chocolatey sweetness rounded out by alder-smoked Munich malt. Named after the Katmai National Park Fat Bear Week 2021 Champion.

Another style finally getting ticked! Smoked Porters have somehow managed to evade me for all these years in beer, and I’m excited to finally try one, a local example at that. I picked this one up at the brewery a few weeks back. Let’s get into it
Pours nearly pitch black with 2 fingers of creamy tan head that slowly fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing
The smoke is highly evident in the nose, but the underlying Porter still shines through. I’m picking up on aromas of beechwood smoke, sweet caramel, red berry, cocoa powder, burnt oak, and dark toast
The smoke is still present in taste but a bit more restrained and contained mostly in the swallow. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting milk chocolate, nutty malt, dark toast, light herbal hos, and caramel. The swallow brings notes of beechwood smoke, herbal hops, sticky toffee, black pepper, raisin, and cocoa powder
A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a a creamy beer. Finishes neutral but slightly drying fron the smoke
For my first example of the style I’d say this is damn solid. I wish more breweries would produce the style but oh well
