On-tap at Steelhead Burlingame

A: The pour is a dark amber (perhaps copper) color with a finger of off-white head.

S: Some citrus hop character to the nose to begin, but this is more on the malty side of red ales. A fair amount of toffee, caramel, and bread, with a touch of acidity.

T: The flavor starts off (and continues on) with toffee, for the most part. It's not terribly sweet, and there's not really any bitterness either. Perhaps a hint of floral hops.

M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation.

D: Another standard brewpub style that seems to be done poorly much of the time. Not quite as bad as some, but not a beer I'd really want again.

Tried this at the brewpub based on the fact that it had apparently won a GABF gold medal award a few years back. Beer is a a cherry wood red color with no head, minimal visual carbonation, and no lacing. Color was quite exquisite but other areas were lacking. Nose is subtle with light malts and nothing else I can really detect. Taste is crisp and smooth, slightly sweet, mild carbonation and smooth in the finish again. I was disappointed with this beer given it's GABF award but overall it's easy to drink and isn't a beer I'd turn away, but I wouldn't seek it out either. I double checked this award off the wesite and discovered that the award was won in 1991 . .. I think American brewing has come a long way since then.

Had on tap at the brewpub.

Deep brown color with distinct red highlights. Little or no head, no lacing. Nose is a clean maltiness. Taste has next to nothing on the front or finish, but the middle has a pleasant body with some malt leavened with the right amount of hops. Fits well with the aroma. Finish is far too short. What's here is pleasant enough, but this isn't a great beer - not even in the top half of Steelhead's offerings.
