Sticke (Stick) is the German word for secret or gossip. This tawny-hued style comes from the altbier family, which is the darker, more robust offering in Cologne, where kolsch is from. Our Stickebeer was brewed in collaboration with our pals from Stonecloud Brewing Company on OKC. Toffee, coffee, and floral notes abound in this beer without overrunning each other for perfect range.

16 oz can courtesy of Russpowell. No obvious freshness date on the can. Apparently, this is a collaboration view with Stonecloud Brewing. I misread this fact on the label, and didn't realize Heirloom had it listed under them until I'd already added it to the database under Stonecloud! Described as a Sticke Beer, it is 5.8% abv. I was always under the impression that Sticke was a term for a stronger Altbier (Uerige Sticke clocks in at 8% abv, I seem to recall), but perhaps I'm wrong.

Poured into a dimpled mug, the beer was a reddish dark brown that took on a more mahogany color when held up to light a fairly modest off-white head was produced and it left little in the way of lace.

The nose seems to be dominated by malts. The primary aroma is one of toasty sweet malts reminiscent of caramel and toasted bread. As it warms a little bit of an herbal hop aroma comes into play as well, but it's decidedly second fiddle to the malts.

The taste is similar to the nose but a little more complex. Up front, and really pretty much throughout, the malty, toasty sweetness is the dominant partner. But it's escorted by a light fruity note almost reminiscent of an English AL East and just a teensy bit of herbal grassy hoppiness.

Very smooth and clean finish.

I initially had my doubts about this beer. It wasn't much of a looker for the style, and initially smelled a bit sweet and one dimensional. This is a subtle beer that improves if you let it warm up a little bit. Definitely a nice Alt beer that I wouldn't mind having several of. Thanks, russ!

Text book example of the style, needs a heavy pour to open up. Toffee, leather, tea, herbal hop bitterness. Recommended if you like altbier and struggle to find it these days.

A Collaboration with Stonecloud Brewing Co.

Pours a chill hazed hazel with a pinky of tan head.Average head retention, better lacing

S: Very toasty, a little grainy

T: Pretty toasty, some brown bread, very dry, some herbal & wood hops up front. Dryness, caramel & woody hops as this beer warms up. Finishes dry, sweet toasty with woody hops

MF: Medium body, low carbonation, very good balance

Classic Alt flavor, fairly complex, but drinkable enough
