A Pretentious Glass Company Imperial Snifter contains three inches of rocky chestnut foam. The head compresses to pancake batter, leaving no lace. The beer is very dark brown, with dark garnet highlights. Late in the session, thin, spotty rings of lace appear.
The aroma contains chocolate with bready roasted malt and a soapy astringency. Ultimately, the astringency takes over entirely, while the bourbon fumes struggle to reach the nose.
The flavor opens with sharp astringency. The bourbon has a harshness, with only a hint of the sweet peat flavor. Chocolate is too much akin to Bakers' chocolate with the associated bitterness. The finish is long, mild, and astringent.
The body is medium with a watery texture and fizzy carbonation. Alcohol is as expected with slight warmth.
This beer is far from what I had hoped and expected of the style. It's not a bad beer and would improve if it could shed the harshness and reveal more of the chocolate. Also missing is the mild roast that should come out with considerable warmth.
