Citizens of Munich were invited to attend festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the wedding of King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. This became the very first Oktoberfest. The fields were named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's Meadow") in honor of the Crown Princess, which is still used to this day and nicknamed Wiesn. In 1516 under the German Purity Law Reinheitsgebot, brewing wheat beers was forbidden. However, due to the popularity of weissbier among royalty, it was the first style to receive an exemption.
This Bavarian wheat beer is a crisp, refreshing brew with a low to moderate alcohol content. The suspended yeast gives this hefeweizen its most notable characteristic; the cloudy appearance. Traditional German Hefeweizens are also distinct in their use of a unique yeast strain which produces a beer with notable amounts of clove, banana, and occasionally bubblegum esters. We worked hard to produce a hefe that leans heavier towards the stronger clove and milder banana, with reduced amounts of bubblegum. This is possible due to a long cooking regime and closely monitored fermentation temperatures.

16oz can, wrap label. No dating information found.
Unfiltered and cloudy, pale gold colored body. Thin finger of white head with the pour but this soon retreats and becomes active surface storm islands and an interrupted ring.
Aroma is yeasty and wheaty. Tangy, with smells of cloves and banana.
Taste is sweet and tangy from the wheat malt. Ester flavors of cloves and banana. Citrus lemon arrives late. Aftertaste cruises on the cloves and banana.
Medium mouthfeel. Coats the mouth but has a crisp finish. Low bitterness. Disappointing carbonation, with no lacing.
Good sweet flavors but really lacks a carbonation that produces a lasting foam head.

16oz can from Hops & Bottles. Cloudy golden pour, with a small foamy head. Bready, malty aroma, sweet. Taste is sweet, bread dough, orange. Really nice finish with a hit of malt sweetness.

Here at Cutthroat in Markleeville and this is one of the beers that’s contract brewed out through Solid Ground and even though this was served with an orange, it was a solid take on the style that was fun, easy to drink, and true to form.
Not a surprise that this was golden and cloudy as its hue was uniform in appearance and just a bit more straw in color than other examples of the style that I drink often. Lots of wheat and banana in the nose as the latter exploded on the palate. Some tall grass and bubblegum came through later on once this warmed up as it was just as good as its European counterparts. Full in body and nicely carbonated it was hard to pace myself as this was easy to quaff and perfect for this time of year.
Hard to detect the alcohol in this as it felt like a session beer, even though it technically wasn’t. Haven’t seen too many imported takes of this style out here but with something this good, who’s to notice? Grab a pint of this as an alternative to the hoppier offerings that made this region famous, and thank Solid Ground later!
