Excited to have found a very cool can art for my first black IPA. It's actually the first I remember seeing in a store ever, so I excitedly snatched it.
16 oz can acclimated to 50°F and poured into an IPA glass.
Pours a dark dark brown color, when light is held to the edges it's revealed to be a slightly milky coffee color. Produces a 4-5 finger foamy khaki head, leaving multiple rings of lacing, it's long lasting, leaving behind a large rocky puddle of foam.
Initial aroma is intense and somewhat complicated. I get bitterness, piney hops, cocoa powder, some coffee, some maltiness and maybe some char and fruity esters? After agitating I smell cocoa in the forgetting, backed by a little alcohol smell.
Initial taste before swallowing is somewhat bitter and seems rich, I get hoppiness and chocolate malt. After swallowing I'm met with a big wave of chocolate and coffee in the back of the mouth, tasting rich and very good. This is backed by roasty bitterness which adds to the experience, concentrating in the tip of the tongue. Additionally there's a moderately bitter hoppiness that stays in the back of the mouth. The roasty bitterness lasts into the long aftertaste and mellows somewhat. I'd like to emphasize that the level of chocolate is equal to, and higher than some stouts I've had, very impressive and very tasty.
Mouthfeel is smooth. Not terribly thick, but despite this it feels somewhat chewy.
Overall I think this is extremely good. It's my first black IPA, so I can't weigh it against any others, but I think it does it's job very very well. I'm not entirely sure if it makes more sense to combine multiple bitter things (cocoa, coffee, hops, malt) or combine 1 butter thing with other things, but I feel it works very well here, it's intense, but it works very well. This combined with the smoothness in the mouthfeel, it makes for a drinking experience that requires effort, but is full of feeling. Intoxicating not in alcohol intake, but in experience. Not a beer I feel I'd drink more than 1 of in a session, but finishing a can slowly is rewarding and filling.
Will absolutely buy again, as well as recommend.

From a 16 oz. can dated 03/14/20. Sampled on April 19, 2020.
Dark brown to near black pour with a lasting tan head. Looks like it should.
I pick up some dark malts but the floral character of the hops is more forward. A bit of char too.
Medium body.
The taste is sweet with a good floral hop bite rounding it out. It is a decent black IPA and worth trying.

Enjoyed 2/17 from being canned 1/27 (or 1/22?)
Pours dark brown with an almost eternal cascade of bubbles, and an ever-growing, one finger, pillowy light beige head.
Smells of caramel and roasted malt.
Taste quite roasted but not overly so. There is a sweet back note like melon. It is not a sweet beer, just an enjoyable afterthought, as are the hops.
Feel is refreshing and light, alcohol warms lightly, and lots of carbonation.
Overall I loved this take on BIPA. This brought the style way back into favor. I have missed a good black ipa for a long time, and I have had a few here and there. This tops the rest.

Can from a Lazy Dog.
Dark brown in color with a decent sized tan head that slowly recedes. Roasty earthy with hints of chocolate and earth. Firm bitterness nice flavor.
