Venn Brewing Co.
Minnesota, United States
Notes: Juniper, bready, full bodied.

Venn’s modern spin on a historical style from Finland. Traditionally brewed with a multigrain malt bill, juniper branches and berries, and fermented with baker’s yeast, we kept the core elements of the diverse malt bill and juniper berries but updated the yeast to a modern lager fermentation resulting in a cleaner finish.

Malts: Two Row, Dark Munich, Rye, Golden Naked Oats, Torrified Wheat, CaraMunich.
Hops: Chinook.
Yeast: American Lager. Other: Juniper Berries.

To the eye: clear, amber hue, slim white head.

In the nose: herbal, vegetal, slightly fruity/malty. Minimal hops. Interesting and inviting.

In the mouth: Sweet and creamy. Herbal, slightly hoppy, mostly malty. Increasingly interesting. Yeah, I'm drinking the forest floor, right? That's it? But it's damned tasty, and wonderfully strong. Delicious is a word I would use. Medium bodied, increasingly alcoholic, and very likable.

(And finished the growler in one evening. Couldn't help

this is a good glass of beer, but it doesnt stay as true to the style as i would have liked. moreover, this is not the style of beer to be conservative with. i get being new, and wanting even the ambitious beers to have wide appeal in the early going, thats just good business, but still, i feel like this is a safe one in a style that wants anything but. i do appreciate the lager fermentation, i think thats cool, but i miss their yeast weirdness, its way too clean, and i would definitely advocate for a more robust juniper element, its faint here, lost to some of the malt weight i think, just not as interesting or unique as i expect sahti to be. its darker than golden but lighter than copper, bronze glowing maybe, good clarity and head. smells multigrain, wheat and oats with the barley, all pale, and thats all there in the flavor too, fuller bodied and cerealy, but again kind of safe and boring, if there is rye in here, its not easily appreciated. there is a faint botanical element here, but its just not as robust as i hoped for. overall not a bad beer, in fact clean and crisp for the style and technically well made. hopefully the next batch will have a bit more character...

I don’t know enough about this kind of beer to rate with any confidence according to style, but I’ll say this: not bad at all. It is a little heavy and sticky and oily in terms of feel, but I think that’s to style. Lots of fresh and foresty taste. Sweet but not cloying worty taste with good resiny juniper or spruce notes. Makes for a nice and interesting change.
