This beer, patterned on the German style and not an American wheat beer, had more of the appearance of an American wheat. It had a hazy wet straw color and no head (WTF?) and left no lace. This was not a good sign.
The smell had some sweet, yeasty malt notes and a prominant banana aroma but lacked the clove spiciness inherent in the German brews. Still, it was a step in the right direction. The taste was where everything left the rails. No banana flavor, no cloves. Not even much malt. Just an all-consuming phenolic taste (think big Band-Aid) and medicinal note that never went away. The feel was light and slick.
Argh!! This one really had me questioning what was going on in their brewing process. I was barely able to finish off the 8oz. sampler. A big disappointment as hefeweizens are my favorite style. This one falls way, way short.
