With a light rusty hue and sharing a fine haze, 4 by 4's Cantankerous floats a loose and lofty froth that stews somberly with caramelized, fruity scents. With equal parts malt and hops registering to the nose, the taste leads with a caramel and honey taste that suggests graham crackers.
As the ale rolls along the middle palate, its malt influence remains strong while the honey and caramel start to take on a staleness with a limp body. Pecan nuttiness rounds the sweetness before the hops share a taste of bruised peach, apricot, orange and grapefruit. A late bitterness is of muddled citrus rinds with peppery grasses and a hint of pine.
Medium full in body, the relaxed carbonation has the textures more align with Amber Ale while the beer trends slightly lifeless, thin and tacky with a cola-like finish and a stale bittersweet aftertaste.
