If you'd ever thought English brewers can over-use word-play and puns in naming their beers then this brewery competes and perhaps wins.
L- Superficially appears black but held to a halogen bulb it's super-deep ruby red. Pours with minor haze, with added minor sediment left in bottle. 5mm mid-tan creamy looking head.
S- It's smells quite pungent, a brief hint of sour?, + hints of the ABV% Overall pretty subtle for a beer of this ABV%
T- OMTG! Super-pungent flavour, I involuntarily shudder. I've had quite a number of rye beers before but nothing like this. Is this what spelt brews into, IDK. It's one of the most pungent tasting beers I've ever had (of c1500). It is deeeeply roasty-toasty, has hints of smoke, then seems to have a sour-bitter twist into the finish of each sip.
F- Veeeeeery deep, pungent, sour-bitter finish
O- Very different, left-field, huge and distinctive character, perhaps unique in having this profile. Added to the curiosity for some reason the bottle's lable features a night-scene starring a British telephone box - dunno!?
Sorry to say though I can finish it I wouldn't buy this again (or drink it again.). It's OTT full-on for me. There's nil point me hoping to review any other beers after this (1st) one tonight, my palate is flattened.
£4.75 330ml bottle 'Bottled: 20/Dec/2017', no expiry or life-span info. Quite possibly given it's nature it never actually expires...
ps. The foam cap held very well and has formed elegant lacing all the way down - this was the highlight.
