Got this one from the liquor store in Maarssen
From a bottle into a snifter
Best before December 2039
Imperial stout with oats, lactose, cacao, see salt, caramel and vanilla
APPEARANCE: Opaque light brown yields a small, thin, bubbly, light tan head that looks like soap bubbles. Head quickly fizzes away to a soapy film and three big bubbles hanging on for dear life. Opaque, muddy dark brown with no carbonation evident. This looks rather nasty.
SMELL: Big nose for sure. The caramel and vanilla pop on this one, with cacao and a salty character, a bit of milk chocolate and cream, as well as a bit of alcohol. This smells like a bar of salty caramel and vanilla chocolate. Nice.
TASTE: Flavorful for sure. Caramel and sweet vanilla cream up front, salty chocolate and butterscotch at the swallow with a little alcohol and milk chocolate as well. Bold finish of salty chocolate, vanilla cream, caramel and butterscotch sweetness, some milk chocolate and fudge brownies lingers on the palate. A bit of booze as well. Sweet with a touch of salt for good measure.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A little airy and foamy on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a burn and finishes somewhat sticky on the palate. Some minor heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is an aromatic, flavorful treat of a beer. It’s like desert in a glass and has a wonderful mixture of sweet, candy-like attributes that make it a desert-lover’s dream. Love everything that’s going on here. Unfortunately, the execution shoots it in the foot somewhat. The head is definitely sloppy and the feel is airy and bubbly for the style. If we can ignore the details, however, then this is a party in a glass. A well sourced bourbon barrel would be a fun addition to the mix as well, though it would change the way the beer is made for sure. In any case, will definitely pick up more of these if they’re available. If the execution were just a little better, it would be a very similar experience to many of the Cycle imperial stouts I crave so much. Cool beer and well worth checking out. Highly recommended!
