Got this one from the liquor store in Maarssen
From a bottle into a snifter
BA Imperial smoked wheat stout
Aged 456 days in Jack Daniels Rye Whisky barrels
Best Before June 2040
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a two finger, medium-thicker looking, creamy light brown head with great retention. Black body with slightly higher levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, creamy cap and clings to the glass. A swirly wisp and ring remains leaving decent lacing down the glass as it empties. Solid looking.
SMELL: Smoked malts, vanilla notes, caramel and toffee aromas, a peated character and some whisky and booze on the nose. Medium strength.
TASTE: Smoked malts, whisky and alcohol up front, with lightly peated flavors at the swallow. Bold and boozy finish of whisky, peated and smoky flavors, toffee sweetness, some vanilla cream and milk chocolate linger on the palate. Notes of roasted coffee behind some of the smoked malts and boozy barrel. Virtually the same as Ben Nevis but slightly more vanilla character.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a bite and finishes quite mouth-coating on the palate. Some light heat lingers.
OVERALL: Good stuff again. The head is a little more attractive on this one and carbonation a little quieter, but it’s still not dark enough for a higher mark. Nevertheless, this one is good times, just like the Ben Nevis edition, and adds a slightly bolder vanilla character in comparison. Worth checking out if you’re into Jopen’s barrel aged stuff, which I certainly am. Cheers!
