Mexican Cake Pastry Stout
APPEARANCE: Transparent light brown pour yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, foamy, fizzy, light tan head with okay retention. Clear bistre brown body with higher levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full wisp and leaves some good lacing. A splotchy wisp remains leaving decent lacing down the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Medium nose of chili peppers, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, caramel and toffee notes, as well as some leather notes. Hints of cinnamon on the nose too.
TASTE: Roasted flavors with leather, some chili peppers and some decent milk chocolate and vanilla sweetness up front. Some caramel notes as well. A roasted and slightly peppery swallow, then a bold finish of smoky chili peppers, cinnamon spice, leather, milk chocolate, some roasted flavors and a touch of bitterness lingers on the palate. Solid flavors.
PALATE: Medium, slightly lighter body and medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, a little foamy perhaps, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating. A bit of chili pepper heat lingers.
OVERALL: Not bad. There have been more impressive Meesterstukken in the past, but this one is alright. The nose and flavor work well though they could be a little more expressive. Moreover, the stout-lover in me wants to see a menacingly black color with a thicker body to the whole thing. Still, if you’re a fan of chili stouts, you’ll like this one. I certainly enjoyed it as well. Cheers!
