Got this one at the Mitra down the road.
From a bottle into a snifter
7,500 total bottles
APPEARANCE: Pours a 1½ finger, medium looking, cream colored head with good retention. Clear bistre brown in color with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a splotchy wisp that stays the whole way and leaves some decent lacing down the glass. Good looking beer.
SMELL: Medium strength nose with dark fruits, raisins, cotton candy notes and some bubble gum as well. Light caramel with the sugary candy aromas as well.
TASTE: A little mild up front with some light dark fruit and sugary flavors, then some cotton candy, bubble gum and light spices at the swallow. Bolder finish of spicy alcohol, sugary bubble gum, caramel and light notes of leather and bitter chocolate as balance. Pretty flavorful after the swallow, but a little mild initially.
PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbo. Creamy on the palate though a little light-weight perhaps, goes down smooth and finishes relatively mouth coating. A bit of a scratch and some heat linger on the palate.
OVERALL: This is a good quad, but not quite good enough to be called a Masterpiece. The nose is a little mild and the flavor is slightly lacking up front. Off the top of my head, I'd say their Ongelovige Thomas is a better beer, though I'd have to try them side-by-side. This is a solid effort, however, and reminds me again that Jopen is a Dutch brewery well worth supporting. Cheers!
