For this review, I decided to keep it light and choose a Mexican lager beer, Blue Corn Cerveza. I just found out Kiitos was from Salt Lake; this is my first review of this brewery. I served the beer at a refreshing 42 degrees using a Belcher glass. The pour created a frothy and airy two-fingered white head with excellent retention. This style is notorious for having terrible head retention. The slow dissipation left chunks of lacing on the glass. The color is SRM 4, pale straw with golden hues - the clarity is clear to brilliant with a few carbonation bubbles. The appearance of this beer is above average.
Nosing the glass, I smell corn, lightly toasted malts, and hops, traditional ingredients for this style. The malt profile is doughy, with a soft toasted bread crust. The hops have a light herbal with a floral blossom note. The corn aromas lend some sweetness to the aromas. Other aromas I noticed are light grass and a skosh of phenols. The aromas are what I would expect in a Mexican lager.
After I smelled the aromas, I looked forward to the taste; however, they were different. The corn flavor and hops dominate the palate. The corn has more sweetness, leaning toward a cooked cream corn vibe. The hops are heavy herbal and floral blossom. The malt is toasted cereal grains, doughy and bready.
The mouthfeel is somewhat astringent and carbonic and finishes dry. The body is medium-light and has medium-plus carbonation.
The aromas were spot on for this beer style, but the flavors were heavy-handed and not light. When I want a Mexican lager, I want it to be light and crisp with a subtle corn sweetness and light hop profile.
