I must admit up front that I have a strong dislike for brewpubs that don't really focus on the beer...Stoddard's caters more to the Silicon Valley after-work wine-drinking crowd than it does to the typical BA crowd. The beer is uninspired and served way too cold, and the menu is slightly more upscale than your typical brewpub (and priced accordingly).

I really wish this place was a winner, as I pass by it on my daily trek to and from work. But the tap selection is very limited, the staff have little or no knowledge of what they're serving, and the atmosphere is not particularly welcoming for a blue-collar guy like myself, so I really can't recommend it to out-of-towners.

They have opened a location in downtown Campbell that is closer to where I live, but I have yet to visit it.

I felt wary of this place before I even spotted it. It shares a block with a number of other nightspots, and that "Bar row" environment doesn't always produce good beerfly spots. My fears were unfounded: this Stoddard's has a lot going for it.

There's a bunch of parking around the back, and that gets you walking in the beergarden entrance. Alfresco beerflying: definitely a plus. We sat inside, though, at the lengthy bar under the giant Stoddard logos identifying the brews that are always on tap: Pale, Porter, ESB and Krystal Weizen. You can sit at the bar and look through windows into the brewing operation. Pretty big tanks for what seemed like a medium sized establishment. I was very impressed with both the pale and ESB and the food. The "jamaican barbecue" was far more imaginative than most pub food: pork on skewers and chicken nicely seasoned. We also had to try a pizza after noticing the open wood-fired oven in the cooking area. Not bad, not outstanding, with good crust crowded with sausage and roasted peppers. The crowd on a Sunday at 9 p.m. was sparse, which may explain the bartender's inexplicable serving style. He was generous with descriptions of the menu and the beer, but came off as bored and unsmiling. No great complaint, but it does have so much to do with one's experience at a bar. I hope some BA is able to visit at a busy time, and give their impressions.

Recommended.
