Appearance: Pale yellow, slightly hazy. Fluffy white head with moderate retention
Aroma: Distinct grapefruit from Simcoe and Pine from Nelson Sauvin. Not much malt aroma. Hops papers over it.
Flavor/Aftertaste: Grapefruit and pine flavors. Light to moderate bitterness. Semi dry.
Palate/Finish: Short semi-dry finish. Medium length with a light bitterness that lingers a bit; but not much. Balanced.
Reviewing this vs other Pale Ales. Akademia is out of Athens, GA and lives in the shadow of Creature Comforts. But they are fine with that because they bill themselves as a brew pub. I promise you this is a very underrated brewery. The head brewer is not "classicly" trained - he comes out of the homebrewing realm. But, he does his research and pays attention to quality. This is a well crafted pale ale. The pairing of Simcoe and Nelson Sauvin hops was an excellent choice, as they compliment each other well. At 5.2% ABV and a mild bitterness that cuts off at the right time, this is a good, solid drinking pale ale. Love these guys. Visit them if you are ever in Athens. Food is good quality too!
